My next Tpop column, part 1 of a two-part look at doujinshi, is up.

Nice article.
Sorry, I'm lettering ATM and don't have much to say.

Thanks! :D

Great article; looking forward to the second installment!

A mangaka who attended Anime North this year told us that Comiket is so popular these days, there is a lottery to get a table. And if you make a mistake on your application, too bad for you, it is tossed.

I"m not surprised: I read somewhere that the attendees number over 500K now, but couldn't find that stat when I was looking last night, so settled for the most recent numbers I could find, 350K from 2003.

Yeah, the girl we shared a table with, had applied for like 3 years running, and finally scored summer and winter spots last year.

Mmm, doujinshi. I would kill to get to go to Comiket or hell, even just a store selling doujin in Japan - I *love* doujinshi but the fandoms I really would love to see doujin of are too obscure here. :( (Either that, or all that comes over is yaoi/porn/etc. which I'm not interested in. Gag or gen, plz.)

I just had an OMGSQUEE hour this afternoon when I figured out that the artists of one of my favorite doujinshi are also professional mangaka (with a series that's been sitting in my to-be-read pile! OMGSQUEE). Now I feel like stalking other doujinshi artists a bit. And rummaging through Minekura's closets.

Cool! XD

I remember seeing a scan of the cover of the original Saiyuki doujinshi somewhere online in the past year or so. That was cool, and I'd love to see the original, although I suspect it's veeeery hard to come by. XD

That's an excellent column. I did not know that doujin is a word.

Thank you. :D I just sent off part 2, about the legalities involved with doujinshi and why the industry tolerates it. So look forward to it! XD

It's a good thing that Japan has significantly different ideas about trademark and copyright than the US. It's a very concrete example of how ignoring "infringment" results in a blossoming of art. Derived doujinshi would never make it off the ground here, because Marvel, DC, Disney, etc are quite prompt with the C&D letters whenever they get the slightest whiff that someone is using their intellectual property.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that the creator shouldn't retain control over characters &etc that they have originated, merely that the way we implement those controls in this country has the effect of freezing a potential industry.

Heh. :D Wait until next week, when I look specifically at the legalities involved. XD

You know, I didn't know what Doujinshi was nor orijinaru until I reda your article. Very well written. Thanks for sharing

You're welcome. :D
