The sandcastles I googled looked like regular castles, it is more curvey and the lines start to look like they are falling in on each other. Most of the bases look "sandy" but in a flowy way and the tops are surprisingly not "sandy" looking at all. You may be able to use an image of ricepaper (http://local.wasp.uwa.edu.au/~pbourke/texture/paper/rice_paper.jpg) and some tools in photoshop?
It needs to be normal lineart, unfortunately. :) The castle itself isn't the problem, it's making it look like sand and not like I'm attempting to make it look like sand.
It took me a while, but I finally figured out some of the chapters where Gaara is doing his thing with the sand and downloaded them to look at. We'll see if that works or not.
I probably ought to be a little bit more detailed in my existential cries of angst:
yes, stipple is the way to do it, but where do the dots go, how do you make it look like sand and not crappy stipple, how do you handle the exterior lines, how does the stipple blend in with the clean inks of the rest of the image*, what about the sand the castle is sitting on and the transisiton from pile o'sand to castle wall, how does light reflect off sand, how do you keep the dots as dots and not little scribbles, and when you modify a brush in Photoshop to do it, how do you keep the smallest dots from going nto a regular line instead of a random pattern?
The answer to all of those questions i: I have no idea how to do it, it's really frustrating, and it's making me exceptionally cranky.

Or like this:

Sand. Whoo. Good luck with that.

Annoying as fuck, but when you're drawing Gaara, you're sort of stuck with it.
