This is a quibble, but I think a fascinating one. The idea behind actors being prostitutes wasn't just focused on females, but one rooted in fact: during the Edo era, kabuki players would often supplement their income as male prostitutes.

Sorry to post that here, but I'm not really up to registering at tpop
Well, yes, but I was talking specifically about female actors and not going into kabuki. I've only got 800-1000 words; I have to focus pretty narrowly. :D
Like I said, it was a quibble, and I generally don't like to point out quibbles, except that I am, uncomfortably so for my heterosexual american maleness, nontheless fascinated with Japanese sexuality in general and samurai sexuality in particular.
Hee. :D No prob, just wanted to explain why I said it that way. XD
I was twisted by Pink Samurai many years ago when it was first published, although I think I've come across criticism of it sometime in the past few years. I think I'm remembering that title correctly...
I read a book a few years ago that was set mostly at the Takarazuka Music Academy, from the point of view of a young American woman teaching English there... I think it was called "Realia." I don't remember it well but I think it was a rather frustrating book, way too much "these people are so strange" eyerolling by the viewpoint character, but the parts about the Academy and the Revue were really fascinating and I always meant to look up less biased information about it. Thanks!
Oh, I should qualify that it was a novel, and as I recall not a very good one -- probably not worth paying much for. But I could be biased or remembering wrong anyway. *^_^* I think I picked it up on the clearance table of the bigbox bookstore, and have since passed in on to the used bookstore.
I was under the impression that it was a novel, for some reason. If I run across it, it'd be worth skimming just to read the novelist's impressions, although I'm not breaking my back too much to find it. :)

(Quibble with the Tpop layout: doesn't it get spelled "cel" in animation, and "cell" in prisons and crosswords?)

And thanks! Now I want to find a performance of theirs* and watch it - the whole thing is fascinating.
* With English subtitles, natch. No matter how cool it is, my tolerance for a play in a language I don't understand is real damn low.
