Why yes I do consider it a moral victory that it's 84 degrees inside my apartment right now. Especially after one night of my mother being here and me cooling it down to 72 or lower for her, because one night of freezing at 72 is enough to re-set the temperature that I'm comfortable at, which means more $$ to the power company.

Mind you, I spent most of the day in a tank top and thin pajama pants under a fan, so it's not like I find 84 degrees refreshing or anything, and I know I won't be able to sleep at this temp without nightmares*, but for now ... visions of keeping my power bill down are dancing in my head.

And now I'm going to put on real clothes and head to the bookstore. I've done a hell of a lot of work today, and by damn I'm going to fritter away my evening in inconsequential pursuits if it kills me.

* Overheating is the one thing guaranteed to cause me nightmares.

I'm paying for some of my travel expenses in sweat. Without the A/C, my power bill runs ~$55-$60. With AC, it runs $150-$180. I'm not sure if I'll be able to go the whole summer - last year I gave in when candles started to melt inside the apartment.

I've been running the fans a lot more this summer, though, but even 3 fans running constantly has got to pull less juice than the air conditioner.

Yeah, mine tends to run $60-70 on average, and I'm fighting to keep it down to that. I run a fan all night long, and the dining-room fan is always on when I'm on the computer (since I made that spot into an office/studio space).

When I do things like clean house all day long, which is what I did Friday night and a good part of Saturday morning (termite people coming in to squirt stuff around all the apartments, and while I might let friends and family see the squalor I live in, by God I'm not going to let total strangers see it), I run the AC because if I'm going to engage in distastefull work, I'm at elast going to be comfortable while doing it.
