It seems cons are bad for my lips - three years ago I came down with a raging allergic reaction to something-or-other after AnimeFest, and I'm pretty sure that I'm having one now - my lips burn and feel sort of rough. I shall phone the doctor tomorrow, because last time I didn't know what it was and my lips ended up trying to peel themselves off my face and I'd rather not deal with that again.

In the meantime, I'll just sit here, feel sorry for myself, and try to keep from touching my face. Maybe I should take a Benadryl, if I can find the bottle.

Ick. I always manage to get sick at the con. Searching for the benadryl right now would probably be good. I would be afraid the doctor would want to put a shot in your lips though.

I found the Benadryl and took one pill - I'd take two but it either wires me or drops me like a rock and I can't predict which effect will happen, so I'm playing it safe.

The last time it happened, I got an antibiotic to fight a secondary bacterial infection that had set in (and which I think is happening now), plus a steroid cream to combat the allergy which contained instructions not to put a diaper over the affected area until it was completely dry. So I suspect that no shots will be in the offing. Shots don't really bother me much, though. As a kid I hated them, but now they're mostly a necessary evil.

I know the feeling: the old Dallas Fantasy Fairs used to have a similar disorder going around from all of the wannabe comics artists kissing Larry Lankford's ass. With some of those guys, it'd take a few weeks for the calluses to wear off the backs of his eyeballs.

*dies laughing*

Good call on the benadryl. I'd be a bit nervous about the proximity of the lips and the throat - anything affecting the mout area. If the throat starts constricting, you're in trouble.

You might want to reconsider that second benadryl.

Do you use different toothpaste or lipstick or something when you go to cons? These days I am leery of switching toothpaste, because it appears I am often allergic to anything other than what I am currently using.

Do you do anything different when setting up art shows -- like holding pins in your lips while centering artwork or anything like that?

On the other hand, my lips have been getting dry too, but that is because of needing to de-fog the car every morning and all that dry air, which probably isn't an issue up where you are.

The first one knocked me out like a rock - I went to bed at 9:30 and didn't stir until my alarm went off at 6:40.

I'm not too worried about my breathing - like last time, this seems to be a topical allergy that affects only the exterior portion of my lips. I'm calling the doctor at 8, as soon as the office opens. Of course if it does anything weird, I'll go into their emergency clinic. :)

I don't know what it was last time - the doctor had me throw out my toothpaste and start using stuff that had no tartar-fighting stuff in it, as plain as I could get it, and switch to plain Vaseline for chapped lips. I have since discovered that artificially orange foods like Chee-Tos or Kraft mac & cheese make my lips break out, and had assumed that maybe I'd eaten Chee-Tos or nacho-flavored Doritos or something like that at the previous con. I know I hadn't this time ... unless maybe it was whatever flavoring they had on the french fries I ate at dinner the first night? They were some sort of seasoned fries. Hm. I'd also though at the previous con that it might be the detergent the napkins were washed with, since I first noticed pain when I ate at the con and wiped my mouth. I've never had a problem with it at *this* con hotel except ... they've just switched owners and it's possible they switched laundry services.

It's possible it's the lip gloss/chapstick type stuff I borrowed from a friend, except ... my lips were dry and painful *before* I borrowed that stuff - I borrowed it precisely to attempt to stop the symptoms.

So I'm pretty much stuck where I was last time, wtih lots of possibilities and no real answers.

Trust me: you do not want to hear my A-Kon experiences stories. If that had you laughing, the A-Kon tales will leave you with terminal head explodey.
