Possible room

I've been monkeying around with room arrangement all day off and on, and this is the best one I've come up with so far.

I really like the Wall o'Books concept, and I'd find or make some sort of artwork that would go above the TV to fill in that space. [livejournal.com profile] rachelmanija got me a child's kimono and vest when she was in Japan last April, and I think they can go on that wall with the light switch, or they can go on the wall above the dresser.

This also solves the problem I had with so much of my furniture being waist-high or lower, and the walls all being empty.

The art table would have one of the pices of fabric I've got lying around thrown on it, to transfer it into a side table/place to hide stuff.

Hm. Have to think on it.

Looks pretty darn good. What if, for symmetry sake, the bigger bookcases were on either side of the other book cases? Or would that just look stupid? I don't know how things match up in terms of design.

They'd probably look good, but they're reeeeeeeeeeeally heavy and would involve me coordinating with friends to come over and move them. :D

How about putting both short bookcases on the wall where the light switch is? I'd also shove the files and the plastic chest in a corner behind your nice screen. But it depends on how much you access them. Maybe the files can go under the desk?

My other thought is to put both short bookcases in front of the desk (I'm assuming the chair at the desk faces towards the futon/tv area rather than towards the wall.)

I like the WALL O'BOOKS too. I have a mini version of that in my house.

That's all my ideas for now. :)

Well, the filing cabinet and the short bookcase next to my desk provide needed surfaces. :) I spread out horizontally when I'm working - my dream is to have a room with the perimeter lined by tables and if they didn't have that porch, I could do that, so I'll have room to spread out. As it is, I desperately need shelves and things within arm's reach to put stuff on while I'm working.

Very interesting. You might be able to move the loveseat a smidge closer to the futon (in the direction of the porch) and use the file cabinet as an end table, if you don't want it in front of the door. Or stick it next to the microwave.

How about turning the awkward wall into an art gallery? And frame the light switch. ;)

* I originally had both short bookcases infront of the desk, but the need for a surface to my side - it'll probably end up holding the printer or the scanner - won out, plus it made the space between the bookcase and the futon a wee bit tight.

If the filing cabinet fits under the desk, it'll probably end up under there, though, just so I can have the stuff it contains at my fingertips.

I was going with the Wall o' Books thing on mine as well. Think it's a librarian thing? ;D

Walls o' books are good. It's ... insulation. Yeah. (Inside wall? We're... keeping the cool air in this room! Yeah!)

If you want STILL MORE SHELVING, Ikea has these handy bridging shelves (http://tinyurl.com/b5wc7) that work (I say from experience) reasonably well even if the tall shelves are some other brand. Come to think of it, we have an extra one stashed in a closet somewhere.

:D I think something for sure will go up on the awkward wall, even if I have to paint it myself. Currently, there's a big (3.5' tall) picture of Manji from Blade of the Immortal gracing the wall right next to the kitchen, because I had an awkward space in the last apartment. And there's a big painting of Anotsu from the same manga over my bed, for the same reason.

Wait - new camera - I can have pics online in two minutes! Manji picture next to kitchen (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v280/telophase14/manji.jpg). (I'm in the stage of completely overhauling the apartmetn that involves me throwing everything I own on the floor. :) Anotsu in the bedroom (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v280/telophase14/anotsu.jpg).

COme to think of it, I have this small storage bench (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v280/telophase14/bench.jpg) in the bedroom that's not doing anything now that I have the tall curtains up there which can be moved into the living room to help fill awkward spaces... (that pile of clothes on the floor in front of it is destined for Goodwill - I just have to take them there.)

Taking work home!

yes, it's a librarian thing.

I'm not moving a whole lot of furniture from WA state to Texas: my bedroom set (dresser, bookshelf/headboard w/ full bed, endtable), a coffee table a friend made for me (currently has my printer on it), my kitchen table and chairs (Dad refinished the latter for me), but all three bookcases, one being 7' tall, are going. And probably some thing-ys that hang over doors and hold paperbacks. And this is after getting rid of a LOT of my books.

Re: yes, it's a librarian thing.

I moved my books and my bookcases 6000 miles in 2004. Most of the rest of my furniture did not make that trip, but I couldn't live without my bookcases.

Bwah! I love (and covet) your many bookcases. I just leave my books in stacks around the house. XD I really need another bookcase.

And you saved a place for your cat! *dies again and again*

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-01-03 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
XD I still have books in stacks around the place. (That's why I've got the three purple bookcases, because I neeeeeed to buy them.) And I still won't ahve enough bookcases, because I've got books in boxes in my mom's attic that every so often she hints Very Strongly at me that I need to come and get.

It's just not an accurate depiction of the apartment without the cat. XD
