While rachelmanija, kate_nepveu and I are reading the Tale of Genji, kintail's quietly been reading the Journey to the West (yes, for all you fangirls, this is the story that Saiyuki is based on), and has discovered all sorts of fanfic tropes and themes in it as well. There's a report on chapters 31 and 53 here, where you can find genderbending and mpreg. :D

I'm reading Journey to the West right now. Well, the Monkey translation of it, because I'm not going to sift through the massness that is the full-translated version.

Tale of Genji is something I was going to read next...as well as the Heike.

I just checked Sei Shonagon's Pillow Book and a book on the court life of Heian Japan out of the library, pretty much to supplement my reading of Genji. Thank God for staff being able to check things out for four months at a time. :D

rachelmanija says it's just like Livejournal, which immediately popped it to the top of my to-read list. I've also got a translation of Murasaki's diary and there's one passage where she harshes on Sei Shonagon. OMG wank!

she's reading the original chinese version of journey to the west? and finding fanfic themes? like slash fanfic themes in there?? =O_O= uh...i don't know how i feel about one of my favourite childhood story series being fanfic-ed.....i mean i love saiyuki, but if you're talking the original story...~.~

In English translation, of course. And the story itself has mpreg and genderbending in it - kintail's not finding places where fanfic can go, but where themes you see in fanfic are also in the story.
