Quick Yaoi-con report

I spent the first half of last week in Monterey at the Internet Librarian conference, then headed off to San Francisco for some fun congoing.

Wednesday was a bit stressful as the route I was taking back took about an hour or so longer than normal thanks to an accident which blocked the road and had everyone inching along at about five miles per hour. Of course my iPod with its car-playing cord thing was in the trunk.

Got to Mountain View, where I was spending Wednesday night at [livejournal.com profile] oyceter and [livejournal.com profile] fannishly's apartment, along with [livejournal.com profile] rachelmanija. Met the rats, who were indeed very cute, and had Thai takeout which reminds me that I haven't had Thai in for-frickin'-ever. *is jonesing for chicken satay*

Thursday I went on into the city, returned the car and found the hotel, and hooked up with my Ycon roommates Connie and Sabrina (galaxy-of-cinders and vega-chyan from DeviantArt) and their friends. We went into SF on the train. Let's just say it's been a very long time since I was with a group of people that made other people look at us funny and get up and move to the other end of the train. XD

We went to Japantown (after much walking uphill in which I relearned that it's not really good to forget you have exercise-induced asthma ... damn I have got to get back to the doctor and get another inhaler) and hit a Japanese hardware store and a couple of stores in the shopping center that the Kinokuniya bookstore is in. Deciding that fabric is a really good souvenir because it's relatively light and packs well, I got two Japanese-influenced cushion covers at the hardware store, and then found four handkerchiefs with Heian-era inspired prints on them at an antique kimono store in the shopping center (the handkerchiefs are not antique). [livejournal.com profile] oyceter reports that two of them are Tale of Genji-inspired - at least one is the Lady Murasaki, IIRC. I've forgotten what the other is; I suppose I ought to scan them in and post them so someone can tell me. XD

And then I threw caution and packing to the wind and bought manga at Kinokuniya including Death Note 2, Hunter x Hunter 5, and Fullmetal Alchemist 3 (or 4? I've forgotten!) There was a video store nearby that had Naruto-themed bags, one that looked like a small version of Gaara's sand gourd, and one that looked like the large scroll case from chapter 1. I restrained myself. Barely.

I and one other person peeled off at that point and headed back via the bus instead of walking, and stopped for dinner at a 50s-themed diner, where I had a hot dog and fries because sometimes you just have to have a hot dog and fries. This other person whose name I will eventually remember (I have her card) bought a manga published by Dark Horse I think, which is a retelling of the Journey to the West story that's rather more traditional than the Saiyuki most of us know and love. XD It focuses on the Monkey King, who seems to have a fetsh for ripping off heads. At any rate, the art was gorgeous, if violent, and I will have to try to find it.

Friday I spent most of the day on my own poking about Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39, looking at sea lions and such. There's a bakery in the area where they make bread in the shapes of alligators and turtles and so on and have a window where people can watch the bakers shaping the loaves. :D Back to the con, in time to register and meet up with [livejournal.com profile] rachelmanija and [livejournal.com profile] oyceter. We went to dinner at a Chinese seafood place nearby, which I think I've mentioned in passing already, but let me just say this is a place that is so authentic that when you order a fish, they bring the fish to you in a bucket flopping around so you can look at it and approve it. Yum. See [livejournal.com profile] rachelmanija and [livejournal.com profile] oyceter's LJs for details on that. :D Then for drinks and manga talk with [livejournal.com profile] greenapple2004, and so to bed.

Saturday I hung out with [livejournal.com profile] tammylee and the Umbrella Studios and Minkland people at their table in the artists' alley off and on. Sold a few prints, pimped Project Blue Rose and the PandaBuddha anthology a bit.

Bought a metric ton of Death Note doujinshi, and a new messenger bag without FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST written on it for those times when I need to at least pretend to be more professional (the FMA bag size is better, but jsut not appropriate at some times XD), met [livejournal.com profile] elfiepike, managed not to meet [livejournal.com profile] herchuckness.

Went to dinner with the Umbrella/Minkland group and associated friends of such at a British-themed restaurant nearby (where I learned that one of the group, [livejournal.com profile] heyoka, had friended me because of a mutual friend, [livejournal.com profile] mechamel. The Internet is a small world, huh?). The serving staff were dressed in vaguely Colonial style, and our waiter was Chinese, and I kept having visions of Jackie Chan as Passepartout in the recent remake of Around the World in 80 Days. He was amusing, despite his tendency to completely skip me EVERY SINGLE TIME we put in a round of orders - drinks, dinner, dessert/coffee/tea ... EVERY SINGLE TIME. At least the food was very good.

And then we had a sketching party. :D

Sunday ... we'll you've heard about that from my voice posts, what with the flight cancellation and everything. It was annoying to realize that I could have had more con time if I'd taken my first impulse and booked the 5:16 flight originally, which is what I ended up on, but oh well. By the time they made the new reservations, it was less than 3 hours until the flight, and if I managed to get the shuttle back to the hotel, find a place to stash my bags, hung out at the con, came back, and went trhough security again ... well there really wouldn't be enough con time to make it worth it. So I stayed at the airport, listened to the iPod, and bought a couple more books.

Anyway, an overall fun time was had, and if Internet Librarian is scheduled the same week as Ycon next year, I might as well go again. :D

I meant to ask-- what were your bestselling prints, and what did you sell from the art show?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-11-03 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
(a) Sold out of the Light and L in bunnysuits pic (go fig), just dribs and drabs here and there for the rest.

(b) Mello and the Saiyuki band print for sure, since they were bid on Saturday. Dunno about the others, since the person who was supposed to pick them up hasn't got back to me yet about them.

Is that Dark Horse Saiyuki manga you were talking about, the really violent one? I think I've seen it on the shelves here, it has sort of a dark cover with a very bestial-looking Monkey King, and I think their version of Sanzo is on the back. It must have had some questionable content because the one I saw was wrapped in plastic. Still, I'm intrigued. :)

There's also another Saiyuki take, there was an animation I heard of not too long ago that was pretty much a parody, featuring a -very- blonde, long-haired Sanzo.

Anyway, I'm glad you had a good time, I'm envious of your DN doujinshi. ;)

It was certainly very violent, with a bestial-looking Monkey King, so probably so. I read bits and pieces of it over her shoulder on the train ride back to the hotel, and really liked the art in it.

Ruu!
It was awesome to meet you and wow, that waiter was totally blind!
XD
Thank you for sketching in my book! I hope to see you at Ycon next year!

XD You're welcome! Thanks for inviting me to dinner & to sit with you guys!

I can't believe the waiter overlooked me THREE times. Maybe I should have had an air horn.

I am irrationally pleased to know that you read Hunter X Hunter too.

I am also fairly certain I ate at that Chinese restaurant last summer. Freaky.

I read HxH in scanlation until they got sucked into the game and spent CHAPTER after CHAPTER setting up and explaining the rules for the CCG for merchandising. (well, that's what it seemed like.) I'm hoping that it will go by faster when those chapters are collected.

It's a great restaurant, though! XD

I am stuck on volume 12 in scanlations, but I've seen all the anime and . . . yeah. Once they got past the set-up, it was entertaining. The reappearance of Hisoka definitely helped there.

Speaking of Light and L in bunnysuits.... if you've got a high res scan of that line art, send it my way. :D I'll print you out a better copy of the sparkly bunnyboys :D
