So I told you the con was a go...

The SF/geek con that a coworker and I are going to be putting on at the library where we work is chugging along at the speed of academia. (On my list this week is to email the ConDFW former guests/panelists who expressed an interest, thank them, and let them know we'll be getting back to them in January...yeesh short notice, but hey.)

Anyway, one of the things I want to do for publicity for the con, which also has the benefit of publicizing Special Collections, is to do an exhibit of the covers of pulp novels in the collections in February. We had a meeting with the Rare Books Librarian, who is excited about this, and who pulled a bunch of dime novels we have as well as some pulp adventure novels out of the vault as a start, and the first week I'm back I'll go about seeing which ones I want to scan and print out, and what themes/text I can work up out of this.

Here are three covers, which are all fantabulous in their own way.

CIRCUS BOB! A corking yarn of circus life and adventure!

THE PHANTOM FOE! An amazing story of peril, mystery, and adventure! And jetpacks!

GALLEON'S GOLD! An enthralling yarn of South Seas treasure!

(With that last one, I can see where Tom of Finland is coming from...)

... wow, there is a lot going on in that second cover. :D

I support the return of "corking", particularly for romance descriptions. I see no problems with this.

Mentioning "corking" on a book cover? Hide your porn, publisher!

"The Boys' Friend Library"? Uh-huh.

Thinking on the state of some of the paperbacks I inherited from my father I'd flinch at touching those. I'd be afraid they'd crumble.

I'm looking forward to the con!
