telophase: (Jiraiya don't play that shit)

jeez louise...

OK, slight background for those of you who don't haunt DeviantArt. Like many of the artists on DA, I do kiribans, which comes from the Japanese word for 'lucky number,' IIRC, and what that means is that I pick a number, and whoever hits that number of pageviews on my DA userpage counter can request a picture from me.

So. My current kiriban is 5555, and the previous was 4224. I set it that high because I've got 3 or 4 kiribans requested that I haven't had a chance to work on yet, due to A-Kon preparations. A couple of days ago, I find this massage on my DA userpage comments list:

" wooooooooooo I am your 5000th hit! I WANNA KIRIBAN FOR IT and if u dont gimme I'm gonna haunt you forever [little dancing emoticon]" plus a link to a screenshot proving the 5000.

Fine. I ignore this for a bit, then decide that I'll tell the person that I'll treat it as a request -- I've got a small list of possible requests from people that I don't guarantee I'll do, just so I can have a list of things to draw when I get stuck for subject matter. If you want me to guarantee you something, you've got to hit a kiriban I've set or pay me $$. So I'm about to go bop off a message to her to tell her that when I get this message from her:

" where my kiriban?! [crying emoticon repeated several times]"

Like hell I want to give her anything now. Which is sort of bad, because I put her on my watch list because I liked her art, but this is a sort of behavior I'd really rather not reward. So I've replied to her with "Demanding a kiriban when I haven't set one for that number is a sure way to annoy me. Politely asking would have had better results."

The bitch of it all is that if she *had* asked me politely, or if she'd made it clear that she was joking, I probably would have been happy to promise her one. *sheesh* Well, if she figures out that she's been rather annoying and apologizes for it, I'll be willing to put a request of hers on my no-guarantees list, because I *do* like to reward graceful apologies. Lord knows there ain't enough of them out there.

Yeesh... that is pretty bad. Sorry you have to deal with that. Must be nice on some level though, having people want your art (not referring to your demander there).

You should give her a Naruto sketch. Of Naruto flippign her off with a wry grin and a speek bubble saying "ask nicely next time." :)

Yeah, it's pretty nice - I'm staring in amazement every day at how my pageviews rack up. I haven't found anyone ripping my art and posting it as their own elsewhere yet, but that's only a matter of time according to other fanartists I've talked to.

Now if only they would *commission* art from me...

I realized after I posted my reply that a better response would have been to treat it as a joke and draw a stick figure and give that to her as her kiriban. Maybe labeling it with a "Hi! I'm NARUTO!" name tag. Oh well. I'll file the idea away and use it some other time.
