BPAL review: Jack

Despite my misgivings in the last post, I was able to separate out the notes more-or-less, and also my allergies didn't stop me from being able to smell it, even though they tried. XD

Jack

BPAL description - From Bewitching Brews. The scent of warm, glowing jack o'lanterns on a warm autumn night: true Halloween pumpkin, spiced with nutmeg, glowing peach and murky clove.

I'm not entirely sure why I picked this one, other than I like descriptions of thins as warm and glowing. :) Well, and it's name was Jack. I've always liked fictional characters named Jack, and the various literary/mythological/trickster associations that have accreted onto "Jack." (I don't think it's a coincidence that both Sparrow and Harkness are Captains Jack.)

Not that the scent has anything to do with them. Anyway.

In vial - Sharp and harsh, with a sweet undertone - almost like burnt cookies. Doesn't smell blended together - the notes are all distinct, and the sensation is rather like jamming a handful of cloves dusted with burnt sugar up your nose.

Wet - Starts to blend a bit - the harshness of the cloves modulates a bit, and the scent gets a bit more complex - as the harshness fades, the cloves get more prominent and the burnt-sugar fades into the background.

Dry - Harshness almost completely gone, with the faint scent of cloves lingering, with that sweetness. It feels like the scent as a whole is fading, but that's probably due to my nose getting tired.

Later - Almost an hour later - much calmer now, and faded a bit but still there. Still clove-y, perhaps a bit nutmeg-y, all blending together and smelling like a candle - there's sort of a base like candles have, maybe due to the remnants of the burnt-sugar smell.

Verdict - Cat not impressed and wouldn't let me scratch her behind the ears when it was still strong. Feels a bit like walking into a candle shop at Christmas. Totally did not get the pumpkin or peach - the spiciness of cloves and nutmeg (but mostly cloves) overwhelmed everything. Anyway, now almost an hour after putting it on, I kind of like it because the Christmas-shopping associations make me feel all homey inside. XD Not exactly the sort of thing to put on if I want to vamp about being exotic. Different holiday than the BPAL description goes with, but I don't go into candle shops other than at Christmas, for the most part, usually in desperation at trying to find a gift for someone. (I never find one in there.)

I really need some sort of BPAL icon. Not sure if I cna find an appropriate Saiyuki image... Hah. Found one in Salty Dog III. *uses*

Heh. I know of the reluctance to give up a scent that maybe didn't work, so, take your time. :)

:) It may also be contributing to my nasal allergies getting a bit stronger at the moment, but that might not have anything to do with it.

I can tell right now I'm probably going to have to try everything I like twice at different times to see if it triggers my allergies. Hm.

My allergies have been playing merry hell with my BPAL testing. It's not so much that I'm allergic to the oils, as that I can't freaking SMELL them well. So what comes across as "lovely sweet pea" to everyone else when I try on Beltane, for example, just filters through the ole nasal passages as "ack, chemical! It's like Sweet n' Low!" Not a pretty thing.

In short: my sympathies.

If you want to swap Jack for Kathmandu, it's yours - the cloves were just too strong for me and I liked Hellcat, which was similar on me, so much better.

Excellent, though sorry it didn't work for you! I love Hellcat, too.

Email is skepticgirl (at) yahoo for addy swapping. :)
