Hmmm

Mythbusters announcer: "The Mythbusters are testing several cooking fuels to see why soldiers might choose to use C4 to heat up MREs."

Dear Mythbusters, I can tell you why they would choose to use C4 to heat up their MREs.

It is because they are young men* and they have some C4.

* And women. But mostly men.

Knowing why is different from seeing/doing it yourself. :)

Pretty much. Although there might be a few who were actually out of other fuel and had an abundance of C4. (The young men who do it just to do it far outnumber the ones who haven't got any other fuel, though.)

And young men LOVE to blow shit up.

Actually, blowing up MREs is probably the best thing to do with them. That being said, I actually ate CRations once and blowing them up is a waste of explosives.

If I had C4 and an MRE, I know what I'd do.

That sounds like the rule of Moar Dakka. You always need moar dakka, because Enough Dakka is more than you have and less than too much, and there's no such thing as Too Much Dakka.

The MREs that I had after Hurricane Ivan hit Pensacola weren't that bed. They certainly weren't gourmet, but they were filling and not unpleasant.

My uncle, who is a construction contractor as well as an accomplished, though amateur, cake decorator, once made a cake in the shape of an 18th-century sailing ship. My brother, the instigator, pointed out that the whole thing would be more accurate if there was a cannon with real gunpowder, and my uncle (who has both gunpowder and the knowledge to use it) decided he was quite right.

Apparently, even with careful measures in place to keep the explosives separated from the eating part of the cake, it did make the whole cake taste a bit sulfurous, but everyone agreed that the spectacle was worth it.
