Problem ... solution!

Posting this in case anyone out there is searching for solutions for this problem with the Kindle.

Problem: My Kindle had been showing extremely decreased battery life, even accounting for the time I spent with the wifi on and messing about putting books into collections.

A bunch of Googling about gave a possible reason: it was perhaps stuck trying to index something, and was continuing to index even while it was asleep, thus running the battery down. I was inclined to believe it, because earlier yesterday I tried to search a book I'd had for a week, and it said the book hadn't been indexed yet. When I searched the Kindle as a whole, it said that 57 books hadn't been indexed yet, which seemed a bit odd as that was well over half the number of items I had on it.

The site I found also said that this tended to happen with books that weren't purchased from the Kindle store, and I'd been putting a lot of non-Kindle books on it from Project Gutenberg and elsewhere, which inclined me even more to consider this the problem.

Solution: Plug the Kindle in and reboot it by holding power button to the right for 30 full seconds, then letting go. About 20 seconds later, the screen starts flashing as it reboots. I left it alone for a bit, then checked the indexing by doing another search ... this time it said there were only 7 books not indexed so that obviously did something! (If it hadn't started indexing them, I was going to manually start it by going to the first book in the list of unindexed books that you access from the search results screen and clicking on it.) I then left it plugged in overnight with the wifi turned on to sync everything up and to download and install any updates that might be out there.

This morning, it was fully charged and indexed. I turned the wifi off and have been periodically reading things in it, with no reduction in the battery indicator at all, unlike the past week or so, which would have produced a visible drain on the indicator with the same amount of usage.
