No clue if these books are any good...
...but their covers attract me.
I'm really going to have to add "veiled men" to the Cool Bits Generator, because one sure way you can get me to pick up a book is to put a veiled man on the cover glowering out at you:

And I HIGHLY APPROVE of this new cover-art trend to put one figure on a white background. I am really going to have to try doing a painting like this myself.

I don't particularly care for griffins in books. However, LOOK AT THIS COVER. One powerful eye, with the reflection of a glowering woman!

And we're back to the one-figure-on-white thing. I haven't read these books yet, but
myrialux rocketed through them. He reports that while they weren't anything out of this world, they kept him reading to the end. And I discovered the author, Brent Weeks, was in Dallas signing books when I was in Dallas, and managed to get over there shortly before he left and bought a copy of his new book for Toby. Weeks said that he often got that comment: people who didn't read a whole lot (Toby tends to play games, watch movies & TV, and code in his spare time instead of read) got sucked in. He's obviously doing something right!

ENTIRELY FOR POTENTIAL YULETIDE PURPOSES, I SWEAR! (I watched Toby play enough of the game to get the flavor, now for the plot...)

I approve of the white background. Maybe I'll try that for my next painting!

But since it's apparently available as a torrent now, I'm going to give it a shot. If it meets my standards, I'll put it on my "to-get" list.
Apparently, there are supposed to be 4 more books in the series, so I hope it's good.
