That sounds cool, I'd like to hear more about it when you're done. Lately I have been thinking of looking for that sort of cook book -- I prefer not to follow recipes, but I'm not a very good cook when experimenting without them, and understanding *why* to do things helps a lot.
I'm quite impressed so far - I'm now reading a section where it gives you the basics of flavors and combining them, which is the fundamentals of what you need for experimentation.
Intriguing. Have you read Alton Brown's I'm Just Here for the Food: Food + Heat = Cooking (http://www.amazon.com/Im-Just-Here-Food-Cooking/dp/1584790830), and if so how does it compare?
Thanks to combining households, I've got access to both the first and second editions. CfG has less obvious graphic design and seems to have more technical information, although I'd have to double-check as I haven't read IJHFTF in a while. CfG has fewer recipes, but a greater emphasis on "these are tools for you to start hacking recipes experimenting on your own."
