2. Post about race and/or racism: in media, in life, in the news, personal experiences, writing characters of color, portrayals of race in fiction, review a book on the subject, etc. (Linking back here is highly appreciated!) The optional theme this year is "global."

Communities on LiveJournal as First Steps

Fighting the Derail Since March 2009 - Many online conversations about race and science fiction/fantasy end up being derailed and losing track of the original subject matter. "This community is meant to be a place that rounds up the anti-derailing efforts in a central location for the benefit of those who want to continue the conversations about cultural appropriation, racial diversity and multiculturalism in SFF fiction and fandom, racism in ditto, and its intersectionality with other oppressions. It is not meant to displace existing conversations or efforts, but to be a resource that supports them and enables additional discussion and action."

Writers of Color 50 Book Challenge - "Basically, we just want people to read works by authors of color. We’re pretty open to any degree of participation that furthers that end. We don't even care which books you read, so long as they're written by authors of color. Seriously, you can read fun books. Easy books. Books that make you happy. Books that get your kink on. They just have to be by authors of color."

Racism 101 - "This community was created as a response to RaceFail '09, an explosion of discussions of racism in SF/F fandom. It became clear that there was a need for a place on LJ for absolute beginners to learn how to talk about race and how to unpack their assumptions. This is that place. There is no need to be familiar with RF '09 or SF/F fandom to participate in this community."
