Woo, earned $30 in surveys tonight! $10 for a focus group looking at commercials (all dull, dull, dull), $10 for pretending to have an opinion on television news programs, and $10 for going through a looong survey clicking radio buttons explaining why I watch a particular show.
The secret to getting a decent return on surveys, it seems, is to (a) sign up for as many programs as you can and (b) being prepared to sit on your duff going through as many as possible for very little reward. The ones that pay you money (or give you points you can redeem for money of gift certificates) are few and far between, and it takes stick-to-it-iveness to get them. I find they're a great way to de-stress after work. Except for surveys about beer, which never seem to admit the possibility that you hate beer so you're forced to choose, say, what sort of beer you prefer to drink. (I choose what sorts of beer my mother prefers to drink when I'm not clicking randomly in those.)
If you happen to be a special case of some sort - like if you suffer from a specific medical problem that manufacturers are trying to make products for, or if you smoke (I've been inundated by $2 survey opportunities that want me to use tobacco of some sort, and so far I haven't lied about it) - then you're a bit more likely to get a for-pay survey.
They're also all rather incestuous, and send out surveys for each other, so you tend to see the same ones cropping up several times.
Many allow redemption for Amazon.com gift certificates, some simply send you a check, others only allow you to exchange for merchandise (ick!) or entries into some sort of sweepstakes (double ick!). Most checks and some Amazon.com gift certificates (even electronic ones) will take up to 4-6 weeks to "process". It may also take up to 4-6 weeks for your rewards to be applied to your account, which accounts for why I tend to forget that I have something coming to me. :D
ETA: Some of them you can't sign up directly for. I found them by doing web searches for "paid surveys" and similar search terms, and sorting through the dross that appeared in the search results, then checking out the companies separately to make sure they weren't just places that wanted to spam you. I'll look for the websites I found to sign up through and post them when I've got them.
ETA2 I used this site - online-paid-surveys.net - to find a lot of the surveys I signed up with. They seem to actually keep spam survey sites off. (Also, I NEVER pay any site or survey that I sign up on - I've seen some scam sites like that.) The link I just gave also lists surveys for other countries - pick your region on the side. They offer good tips to maximize the surveys you get here.
ETA3 The surveys listed on this site also seem to be legit, as they list a lot of the ones I've signed up for, and they also have links for non-US survey sites.

http://www.lightspeedpanel.com -> Will take people from a number of countries, not just the US. This is the one that has now TWICE given me surveys that count for a giant number of points, which I can redeem for Amazon.com gift certificates. Have gotten $25 in gift certificates since July, and when tonight's survey gets posted, I'll be able to get another $10 one. Sign up through one of the two sites I linked above. (If you can. The comments report issues. :D)
http://www.valuedopinions.com -> This is one of the ones where I don't notice that I've taken surveys that give me $1 or so here and there, and when I log into the site and check my balance 2 months later ... hey! $7! Will redeem for a gift certificate to Amazon.com, Blockbuster, or a few other places. I've redeemed one Amazon.com gift certificate for $20 from them. Sign up here - the link is a referral from the online-paid-surveys.net site I linked in ETA2 up there. I can't find a non-referral link for it. Go to that link, then click 'Join' in the menu and the page will reload with the sign-up form.
http://surveyspot.com/ -> Another of those that send me a steady stream of surveys, most of which I don't qualify for. Allows you to do a silly Instant Rewards Game after every survey whether you qualify or not. Claim to give away actual prizes in the instant win games, but in practice it's always entries into their sweepstakes. Because of the sheer number of surveys, it's another one that tends to build up the occasional small reward here and there until one day I look and hey! $10! Sends a check. I've gotten a total of $30 from them since July. Sign up here. (non-referral link)
http://www.greenfieldonline.com/ -> Another "oh dear God IS THERE NO END TO THE SURVEYS?!" one. Constantly sending out surveys, 90% of which I don't qualify for, and 99.9% of which have only an entry into their sweepstakes as a reward. Nevertheless, I managed to get into an online focus group that gave me $30 for looking at a website and critiquing it (the setup was kind of cool, actually), so that plus the other veeery occasional $1 or $2 surveys have given me a total of $47 since July. Will send it to your Paypal account within a few days when you redeem it. Also! If I invite friends, I get $1 after you sign up and complete a survey! http://www.technologyreviewresearchpanel.com/ -> Very slow. As in, I get invited to 1 or 2 surveys a year, and I usually don't qualify for them. On the bright side, you get $5 for each survey you *do* qualify for, and can redeem that for cash or gift certificates to Amazon.com or other places. In the 5 years I've been on this panel, I've managed to get a grand total of $15.
http://globaltestmarket.com/ -> Another one that takes people outside of the US. :) I don't get a whole lot of survey invitations from them (others on my f-list have better luck, I think), so haven't redeemed my points yet, but if I wanted to I could get $10 from them at the moment. Each MarketPoint you receive is worth US$.05, and you can redeem them when they hit $10. Good part: even if you don't qualify for a survey, they give you a few points. It's another one that gives points for referrals, so if you'd like to sign up let me know via email. (Referral page link for my convenience.)

https://www.opinionoutpost.com/ -> Another one with a silly instant-win game after each survey. They don't send me many invites, but at least every point they award you is worth $.10. I've cashed out a $12.90 check from them, and currently have $7.50 worth of points sitting in my account. http://www.surveyexchange.com -> This sends a metric TON of surveys out through other companies under the name OTX. I've only just signed up a couple of weeks ago, so I can't really tell you what the reward/effort ratio is. It's another one that gives you points if you don't qualify for a survey, but only for the surveys they send out directly: if you access the survey through a different company, that other company rewards you whatever they reward you. Someone on the Greenfield Online forums said that he never takes any OTX surveys sent out by anyone else, because they pay better through this link. I haven't tested this hypothesis yet. You can cash out for Amazon.com gift certificates when it reached 4500 or 8000 points ($5 or $10 respectively) or other gift cards. Of the 4 surveys they've sent me this month, I got 250, 650 and 1200 for the three I qualified for, and 50 for the one I didn't.
http://zoompanel.com -> Gives you points that can only be exchanged for merchandise or donations to various charities. While they've got a lot of books and CDs available on the site, TOTALLY not worth my while. They have a referral program, but I refuse to refer anyone to them because they suck.
http://www.harrispollonline.com/ -> Another one that only redeems points for merchandise or - even better - for entries into their sweepstakes. Sucks. Not worth it, especially as they don't send out may surveys.
I think there's probably 1 or 2 more that I signed up for but which send me surveys so rarely I never remember them.
ETA: http://www.i-say.com/ -> You earn points, which you can redeem for gift certificates to Amazon and other places. Haven't earned enough to redeem yet.
I also got onto a Kraft Shoppers Panel through one of these survey places, which means that for every eight weeks where I log in and post at least one comment per week to their discussion board or answer at least one poll per week, I get a $10 Amazon.com gift certificate. I, er, ahven't earned one yet because I didn't know about the Amazon gift certificate until two weeks ago. XD So I have made a resolution to log on once a week for that. :D
So in the past 5 months I have received ... dear God ... a bit over $150 in various forms of compensation. Plus a free bottle of lotion that I tested as part of a product test. I think I can handle that!

I'm disappointed in http://www.cashforaction.com/ because the EasyHumor search engine they send you to sometimes has a virus. Not to mention neither search engine (EasySearchAll is the other one) digs up anything related to what you're interested in 75% of the time. -_-

You might be running into the thing where LJ doesn't allow some types of code. I've only used the plain text links on LJ, so I haven't worked out which of the widgets Amazon has works on LJ and which doesn't.
