Either there's something wrong with my smoke detector or it announces that the battery is dead by causing the alarm to go off EVERY THREE HOURS. ALL NIGHT LONG. Not polite little "You need to replace the battery!" chirps, but the whole "Awake! Fear! Fire! Foes! Awake!" alarm.

THIS IS PROFOUNDLY STUPID.

Have zipped out to convenience store to buy caffeine and 9-volt battery, and replaced it. If it was the battery, it should be fine. If not, the pattern should make it go off Any Minute Now.

It did not go off, leading me to believe it was the battery causing this. It's reported to the office, as it cannot possibly be designed to set the alarm off when the battery is low, and am waiting on maintenance guy. Blarg.

Maintenance Guy: Office and Apartment super hero! With his super overalls and his trusty wrench he can solve any dilemma with a sturdy "I think you'll need a new one" or"I've never seen THIS before"

"Well, THERE'S your problem!"

Mine is a wired-in smoke detector that beeps once every hour, even if the backup battery is changed. I can't get it to stop doing that, so I just try to ignore it. And it's a new smoke detector too.

This one's wired-in as well, so it's the backup battery doing it. GAAAAAH.

I am profoundly grateful that it's the one at shin-level at the top of the stairs to the garage rather than one of the ones in the ceiling, which I can't reach at all, even with my stepladder, because it's so high and I'm so short.

Mine's in the ceiling. At least it's not a super high ceiling. But I'm still a touch too short to reach it easily with a stepladder.

No, no, a lot of new smoke detectors are designed that way. The ones in my parents' house is. Except it's not just the one that has the low battery. One low battery causes all of the detectors in the house to go off every half hour, leaving you to hunt for the source by trying to see which has its light turned off. It's a big house.

Am not happy about that, as in if the ones in the ceiling that I can't reach go off, I'm going out and getting a hotel room because I CANNOT SLEEP.

Your pain, I feels it. Just a few days ago, the cabin my parents and I were staying in had a smoke alarm that was doing that. Not cheeping, but going off full-blast a couple times. I yanked it down and took out the battery, and since it wasn't wired-in, that solved the problem.

Except I just got home, and what do you think is happening? Yep, one of the smoke alarms is cheeping. We have about fifteen of them in this house, so I had to wander around trying to figure out which one it was, then I had to get the ladder (and thank god it wasn't one of the ones on the super-high ceilings because I can't reach those) and unplug it and take the battery out. And it's still cheeping, so I wrapped it in a sweater and ditched it in the laundry room.

...MY POINT BEING. Whoever invented this whole making-noise-incessantly-when-the-battery-is-low thing with smoke alarms needs to be put on a spit and roasted over and open fire. I am just about ready to chuck my fire alarms and take my chances. Arg.

My smoke detector does this. It's annoying.

Mine did what yours was doing at Midnight. When I Was Asleep. I'm not happy.
