Huh.

Searching in WorldCat for keyword: japan and keyword: Supernatural, then filtering by Not Juvenile and, more irritatingly, Not Fiction still gets you about a squillion editions of the Bleach manga, as well as other manga.

FICTION, damn you! It's FICTION! I DON'T CARE that technically comics are cataloged in nonfiction over in the ART section, the search is rendered ALMOST USELESS by manga! AAARRGH!

ETA; A subject search for "Ghosts -- Japan" returns the same damn thing. Man, I love Bleach but NOT WHEN I'M LOOKING FOR ACADEMIC WORK ON THE JAPANESE SUPERNATURAL.

I have a strangely similar feeling on the subject of shelf space at home, and manga ... .

Of course this instantly makes me want to try to search for things, but I'll probably come up with lots of stuff you've already found. Your resources are probably better than mine.

I feel your pain. The internet refuses to believe we could ever by interested in asian mythology and other supernatural things if it's not directly related to an anime or manga series.

And there were even non supernatural series showing up in the search, which I guess means it was originally cataloged by SOMEONE STUPID.

I was going to try to be generous and ask if the series at least had characters interested in the supernatural or the stories were based on mythology, but I suspect that would be me trying too hard to be generous.

Is the biblio at the end of this any good at all? (It sounds like a fascinating course.) And this. This. Japanese Ghosts and Demons.

(Is any of that good for you? Should I stop?)

The "Monsters -- Japan" subject search brings up, among other things, FLCL. *headdesk*

I ILLed the Addiss book earlier today, and just ILLed the other English book on the Obakemono site a few minutes ago. XD

(Sweet! That syllabus uses Usagi Yojombo!)

I've been sticking to books at the moment - haven't really spread out to journals yet. I'll need to see how many theses and dissertations I can get my hands on, as I seem to have read all the English-language books on Chinese and Japanese foxes, but I can see a bunch of t&d on them in WorldCat.

Try searching su: "Folklore" and su: "Japan", kw: "ghosts" and limit to English, books, not fiction and not juvenile. That takes it down to 5 results, none manga. You should be able to play around with the links in the subject description areas and let them lead you to other books.

That's how I'd do it, at least. :D
