Neil Gaiman just released an unabridged reading of Neverwhere, read by himself. He's an awesome reader and does great voices. Highly recommended. There's a new Temeraire novel out that's supposed to be really good, it takes place partly in Africa. You cannot go too far wrong with dragons, I feel.
I've been rereading *looks around to make sure no one is watching* the Last Herald Mage trilogy. Crack at its Best. Sunshine by McKinley is good, too, but not really very cracky. Well, okay, she combines cinnamon rolls and vampires, so maybe it counts.
I made your salsa last night and it cured what ailed me. Well, okay, I still have a house full of unpacked boxes, a photoshop that crashes, and a headache/kneeache, but I care a whole lot less, now that I have Good Quality Salsa. Mmmm. I would send you some if I could.
I HAVE NOT BEEN AT WORK IN A WEEK, I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT BOOKS ARE OUT. i did enjoy that manga ba_ku though. because i'm a jerk like that. (alsoalwayskingcityifyoucangetyourhandsonit). i'm reading peter and the starcatchers now, with my one good eye. i'm sure that's no help.
I would mail you Sanzo, but I can't afford the postage.
Instead, would you like the Athena vol. 1 and 2 I just scored at the used bookstore last weekend? Some time ago either you or rachelmanija, I don't rememember which, was asking for recs of American manga, and I said "Athena by Dean Hsieh! but, um, it's quite out of print."
But now I have a set for lending! They fit the bill for CRACK adventure pretty well.
I think that once a friend of mine who not only isn't participating in Yuletide, he's never even seen the canon for this, gets back from his conference, I'm going to have him read it and see if anything springs to mind.
Although you've already been to the bookstore, something to chew on for later, perhaps.
Since I've become highly addicted to the series lately... (Maybe you've already read them...) The Dresden Files are fun, sci-fi mystery that don't require too much brain function. Wizard PI in modern day Chicago. Vampires, werewolves, and faeries (oh my!). Thus far, there are 9 books out. I just finished the 5th last night. Good, funny stuff.
I just finished the Patricia Cornwell Jack the Ripper book. It is TERRIBLE! But oddly compelling. I swear I finished it just to see what crazy shit she would say next. I'm sort of surprised she didn't say William Sickert started World War I by killing Archduke Ferdinand.
Now white chocolate is a fine idea! I'd say it's almost gilding the lily, but I was dumping peppermint ice cream on top of the brownies, so I don't think I can talk.
My lj address actually points to my real one, happily. Fwing me your address and I'll send it when I can - am notoriously flaky but will try for soon!
Naturally I've had to start rereading it. :) It holds up pretty well for ten years gone. Hm, and the author lives in Texas, apparently - wonder what he's doing now?

Failing that... have you ever tried Kaori Yuki's Godchild? Insane Gothic crack; develops a plot (eventually) and then becomes insanely compelling.

Well, not really. I think writing on these brownies would be a sin.
But I'll eat one in your honor!

Antithetical Squid?
The Inevitable Skull?
Life Until Death?
A Genteel Black Hole?
Two Thousand Glods?
I should probably stop now.

I have a spare copy of Hoshin Engi vol. 1 that can be yours for the asking, if you think it would cheer you up at all ... I could mail it tomorrow.
