The Thing in question is a sketchbook of bound watercolor paper for yhlee titled "My Shitty Watercolor Art" because the art process involves making a lot of really terrible art before you make good art* and it's annoying and frustrating as hell. Go see it over on yhlee's DW.

*The art equivalent of the One Million Words of writing.

comments

...I guess to make up for not posting for days on end?

At any rate, I've been papercrafting along. I did indeed make one Thing and sent it out to someone who commented on the post back in...November, was it? I created a second Thing and before I'd gotten around to sending it to the next person on the list, (a) various bits of it started coming up because one of the materials I used wasn't the right one and (b) Christmas loomed on the horizon and I ended up making 3 golf score notebooks, 2 Christmas notebook/albums and one notebook with a Japanese stab binding for various family members. I have also made myself a discbound project notebook for home and a Coptic stitch/French link bound planner for work.

So there's every chance that you'll get something if your name is on the list. It just requires I make something without having a purpose in mind. :)

The most recent Thing I made was because yhlee is a Bad Influence. After his posting about the boardgame/RPG Gloomhaven, myrialux and I decided to go ahead and sink the money into it (it is...not cheap, but it is also extensive and full of tiny little tokens and per pound is probably a great deal). And because it is advisable to make some notes and keep track of things you have done and collected, instead of appropriating one of the many notebooks I have lying around, I made one.

( cut for pics )

We haven't actually played the game yet: we just got it Sunday. :)

comments

Feeling the need to make things with my hands instead of digitally lately (plus exploring ideas for ephemera for a play-by-mail game yhlee and I are doing), I've been downloading junk journal, folio, and folder kits from Etsy. While I'm not into the full junk journal aesthetic*, there's a lot of interesting ways to piece together books, boxes, folders, etc. and nothing says I have to use all of the vast amount of manufactured ephemera that come with the digital kits.

ANYWAY! After I made a first test journal, I wanted to make another one, and make it for someone else. It occurred to me that a Tarot-themed notebook/journal would be appreciated by yhlee and so that's what I did.

( cut for pics )

* Too often they're crammed full of manufactured ephemera, with no space to make it yours, really. And I have seen too many lovely collage/3D assemblage designs ruined by placing an unnecessary word on it.**

** Neither me nor myrialux are into using words like "Inspire!" "~dream~" and whatnot in design. It's one thing if you're putting together an album of travel photos and are using words to, say, caption photos or label sections, but to create an assemblage of travel-related ephemera and then smack the word "travel" on it in a vintage font is just unnecessary.*** My apologies if you're that sort of person, but it's just not me.

*** I am aware the pillow in the background of many of the pics has words on it. In this case they're too small to read, so the script becomes a design element, instead of a statement, which I'm fine with.

comments
