Aaaand yesterday was inexplicably a slow day in LJ land as my breakup post made it to the top 25 of posts on LJ, was #5 the last time I looked this morning, and is gathering comments from people I'm not familiar with! Not complaining, just wondering why *my* post hit the big time and not any of the other million posts I've seen on the subject.

Well, they finally did it.

It's been a good 15ish years, but this new agreement LJ wants me to sign has done it. I'm stopping crossposting to LJ and moving over to Dreamwidth. You can find me there at [personal profile] telophase, same as LJ, and if you don't want to get a DW you can use OpenID to comment with your LJ, Facebook, or other creds. A warning: if I don't log in to LJ for 6 months, they can now delete my account and free up the user name, so I may vanish if I forget to do that.

The bits of the agreement I'm eyeing sideways under the cut:

If you comment on LJ and I don't comment back, it's because LJ is being very weird and either not showing me the comments at all (Firefox) or is showing them to me but making it very difficult to actually click on any link to reply or button to post it (Chrome).

Bah.

I have yet again accepted that I'm not going to go back and reply to all the unreplied-to comments on LJ and DW that I've been keeping in my inbox for months, and deleted them. If I have not replied to you it's because I am a slacker and not because of any ulterior motive.

Livejournal, why are you not letting me reply to comments over there? You are complaining my login cookie has been lost when I try to reply, and yet I am logged in and you are showing me locked posts on my f-list?!

AUGH LIVEJOURNAL WTF?

I'm attempting to post a comment in someone's LJ and I'm now getting an LJ error in what looks like Chinese?!
收集你登记数据的cookie程序失踪了吧?

SO: [livejournal.com profile] wordsofastory, I'm attempting to comment on your Game of Thrones post with this (no spoilers, but I won't guarantee any comments made to this post will be spoiler-free):
I'll direct you to this Fanfare thread at Metafilter for discussion of the beetle thing, and a couple of good interpretations. Alas, the thread is 300+ comments and I read them yesterday, and I'm attempting to get actual work done today, so I'm not diving back into there in order to point out the relevant comments (but I expect ctrl-F for "beetle" will point to them).
And now I go to log out of LJ and log back in and see if that fixes the error. ETA: It seems to have fixed it.

To change back to old LJ style...

There should be a little speech bubble with a question mark on the top right of the new profile page. Clicking that gets you the pop-up that allows you to go back to the old style.

Or, if you're me, the speech bubble and questions mark do not show up, but clicking randomly on blank spaces on the top right of the bar at the top of the profile page led the pop-up to pop up, from which I could change back to the old style. (THANK YOU [personal profile] boxofdelights!)

Awesome, Livejournal!

The beta test that you threw me on five minutes ago has rendered me unable to read any comments on LJ! Awesome! Exactly what I wanted! How did you ever know?

I've tested removing AdBlock and the Greasemonkey script that stops LJ perma-loading, but they don't seem to affect it. Off to try Ghostery next...

edit: Ah, I forgot I don't have Ghostery installed on my work computer. So that's ruled out!

edit edit: to get back to the old style, follow these directions

BTW...

Messing with my Dreamwidth journal style. Maybe be terribly messed up for a few days. No need to inform me. :D

Got a spam comment over on LJ, and before I report and ban it, I'm testing to see if it's one of those bots that parse your reply content and then post a snippet scraped from somewhere else that corresponds roughly to what you say. (I got into an argument with one of those bots once before realizing what it was and deleting the entire exchange in shame, which I now regret because I want to go back and reread it! And it may thereby have passed the Turing test.)

It's reasonably clever--it's got a recipe it scraped from somewhere on its LJ page, and sounds human, except that the second half of comment would have been more suited to a regular reader of my LJ and not a random drop-by, which is what they were pretending to be. Well, and the first half was fairly stupid, because I don't think many of us have been overly frustrated by choosing an exciting salad dressing. Okay, so it doesn't sound that human after all.

(The sales pitch is in the LJ profile, for a bankruptcy attorney.)

LJ comment malware

If you're getting spam comments with a video in old entries (I got 2 in a community post from 2004 that I'd forgotten about), do not play it! Just delete and report as spam. Details here. List of known bot accounts here.

Hey LJ why can I not reply to a comment in my own post? Thanks for nothing!

(I click the 'Add a comment' button...nothing happens. Or perhaps the recipient will get 43535643 copies of the reply later this evening from all the times I've clicked the button.)

Stolen shamelessly from [personal profile] kate_nepveu:
ETA: if you are using an LJ S2 style (if you don't know what that means, you probably are): go to settings / display and check "View comment pages from my Friends page in my own style" to get back the missing functionality of preview, dropdown icon selection, and comment subjects (but realize that not everyone will see your comment subjects depending on their own style).

By the way...

...if you don't like the latest round of LJ changes, Dreamwidth has account creation open for the rest of the month, no invite code needed.

DW codes

If any of you are unnerved enough by the DDoS attacks on LJ and want a backup on Dreamwidth, I've got several codes - drop me a line here (or by the email on my profile if you want to be a bit more anonymous).

Via [livejournal.com profile] trobadora: If you're getting caught in the no-LJ-notifications, here's the probably explanation:
LJ's IP is listed in the Spamhaus Blocking List because LJ is allowing Russian pharma spammers to abuse their service. Spamhaus is one of the most respected anti spam organizations in the world, and being listed there means they've ignored spammers on their network for quite a while and virtually no large ISP/email host wants their mail until they start acting like responsible Internet citizens.

http://www.spamhaus.org/Sbl/listings.lasso?isp=livejournal.com is the listing.

Remember the outbound affiliate link drama on LJ from last month?

Well, it now seems they've implemented something that works the way they wanted it to - in other words, if you post a non-affiliate link to a site like Amazon.com that gives money for referrals, they change it to an affiliate link that gives money to LJ.

If you post an affiliate link that gives money to you, they don't touch it.

If you'd rather not give your money to LJ all-unknowing, or if the script running slows down your browsing, you can opt out for yourself, and I discovered last time that if you obfuscate your links with a URL shortener like bit.ly or tinyurl.com, then they leave it alone, if you'd rather people clicking on your links not support LJ all-unknowing.

The 8 people who've asked for Dreamwidth invite codes on my previous post have had them mailed as of 10:40 PM Central -- if you asked before then and haven't got it yet, drop me a line and let me know. :)

Linkspam about the LJ affiliate-link code kerfuffle: http://rydra-wong.dreamwidth.org/200244.html

Of note is this link where an LJ support person shows up in the comments to explain what's going on, at least from her point of view (i.e. we already know that LJ administration is very much a case of the right hand not knowing what the left is doing and so at her level she doesn't know what the higher-ups are doing, only what they tell her).

And this link, which says the code should be gone now.
