A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned that we'd gone to IKEA and the Container Store and PURCHASED ALL THE THINGS because we'd finally gotten our washer and dryer stacked and could finally get our laundry room organized.

We added the final touch tonight, so now I have pictures!

Yup, with medication changes, it's pretty clear that my migraines were being encouraged by something I"d been taking before. We just spent 40 minutes in the backyard hacking at bushes and reinstalling our soaker hose and while my head isn't AOK, it's not migrainey either. Used to be, 10 minutes in the heat and I'd have a raging migraine for the rest of the day. Instead, at about 40 minutes in I realized I was getting lightheaded and weak-feeling, probably due to dehydration, and quit, leaving Toby to finish gathering up the branches I'd cut off.

So: yay. (And a couple of glasses of water and lying on the couch for a while made me much better.)

So last week the yard people came and removed the broken tree, and round the stump down and rearranged the rocks in the area so you can't tell there was ever a tree there. There's a big hole in the general yard decor, though, which makes us feel slightly more exposed to the road beyond the brick fence. :) Anyway, there's a few juniper-looking bushes there and I went and hacked at their bases on the assumption that if they were juniper we could train them to grow up instead of out and provide a bit more sound insulation from the traffic. And then I hacked at a few more bushes -- one crape myrtle I"m turning into a treelike thing because there's a small path from the stone paved area to the grassy area that I"d like to be able to walk through without dodging branches.* And there was one growing near the house that was getting aggressively large, so I hacked the branches down so it would be more bushlike instead of treelike.

We'll see what happens.

* Naturally it'll probably turn out to be the wrong time of year for doing this or something but oh well.

We seem to have come through mostly unscathed except for the tree that almost didn't survive the drought. It's broken and leaning - still, technically, alive because half the trunk isn't broken but it's leaning at a bad angle and the next big storm to come through will probably finish it off. Right down on top of the brick fence at the back of the house, I expect. Poo.

We've got a professional horticulturist friend, and we're gonna shoot her pics and have her advise. I think the question is mostly - do we dig the stump out or do we cut it off at the break and let it be a bush, and will it make a nice bush?

We had a bunny in our front yard this morning! It ran off as soon as my car backed out of the garage, and I saw its tail flashing as it ran.

I'm surprised it was out and about in the neighborhood this late - we're a block away from a middle school, so there's lots of traffic in the morning (and at 3:30 PM!), and there's a bus stop for older kids waiting for the school bus 7 or 8 houses away, so lots of walking around the sidewalks at the time.

The finches are back, the males sporting deep red plumage, and the mourning doves and bluejays are active. I haven't seen any killdeer yet, but I hope to.

The tollway that's going in on the other side of the housing development makes me happy and sad - happy that we'll be getting a grocery store and other necessities of urban life much closer to us, but sad that it's going through the prairie south of us, so much of the wildlife will be moving away and other urban wildlife moving in.

Peeve: titling an email "Following up" when it is, in fact, the first time I am hearing about an issue.

New glasses. Progressive lenses. Not sure about them - not the progressive bit, as I'll get used to that, but I still can't focus at the distance that is comfortable for me to work on close-up work. Hrm. Also, the edges distort a little too much. I know it's the nature of lenses to be circular-ish in general, but previously I could actually glance sidelong at someone and not notice anything. Hrm again.

Toby reports that our new gas range is here!

So yesterday as we were wandering around The Great Indoors waiting for our salesman to be free so we could buy a range from him, we got to looking at the various appliances on display to pass the time. After we exhausted the possibilities inherent in the pro-level ranges and stovetops, we poked our way through the dishwashers and ended up at the fridges (alas, little suspecting we'd be getting a new one soon, or we'd have looked more seriously!).

And then we found it: the ultimate in modern food-cooling technology.

It is enabled for wifi.

New fridge!

This time, a warranty paid for itself. We are a mixed marriage - I have an inborn conviction that all warranties are scams perpetrated by a store to screw more money out of you, while Toby has a feeling that they're good insurance. So we end up compromising and getting them on some items and not getting them on others.

It worked out this time, in spades. We originally bought a discounted fridge from a Sears outlet (scratches on the outside), and got the shorter warranty. Last week it started making thumping noises when trying to make ice, so we turned that off and called the repair person. He showed up today and discovered that two rods that are an integral part of the icemaking process were bent. Bending them back usually breaks them, so he went back to base and reported it, and we just got a call that Sears would replace the fridge. Or, rather (and better!) give us a credit for the full price of the fridge, not the discount at which we bought it, which amounts to 1/3 more than we paid for it to start.

Off to Consumer Reports!

So we're mostly done with the living room, and are asking the hivemind about how to prop a picture up so the cats won't knock it over (hah!).
