If you're getting spam comments with a video in old entries (I got 2 in a community post from 2004 that I'd forgotten about), do not play it! Just delete and report as spam. Details here. List of known bot accounts here.

Hey LJ why can I not reply to a comment in my own post? Thanks for nothing!

(I click the 'Add a comment' button...nothing happens. Or perhaps the recipient will get 43535643 copies of the reply later this evening from all the times I've clicked the button.)

ETA: if you are using an LJ S2 style (if you don't know what that means, you probably are): go to settings / display and check "View comment pages from my Friends page in my own style" to get back the missing functionality of preview, dropdown icon selection, and comment subjects (but realize that not everyone will see your comment subjects depending on their own style).

...if you don't like the latest round of LJ changes, Dreamwidth has account creation open for the rest of the month, no invite code needed.

Very interesting post on LJ in Russia. (Hint: it's basically Russia's only free press.)
ETA: Not necessarily. CHeck 1st comment on my DW for more.

If any of you are unnerved enough by the DDoS attacks on LJ and want a backup on Dreamwidth, I've got several codes - drop me a line here (or by the email on my profile if you want to be a bit more anonymous).

Via [livejournal.com profile] trobadora: If you're getting caught in the no-LJ-notifications, here's the probably explanation:
LJ's IP is listed in the Spamhaus Blocking List because LJ is allowing Russian pharma spammers to abuse their service. Spamhaus is one of the most respected anti spam organizations in the world, and being listed there means they've ignored spammers on their network for quite a while and virtually no large ISP/email host wants their mail until they start acting like responsible Internet citizens.

http://www.spamhaus.org/Sbl/listings.lasso?isp=livejournal.com is the listing.

Well, it now seems they've implemented something that works the way they wanted it to - in other words, if you post a non-affiliate link to a site like Amazon.com that gives money for referrals, they change it to an affiliate link that gives money to LJ.

If you post an affiliate link that gives money to you, they don't touch it.

If you'd rather not give your money to LJ all-unknowing, or if the script running slows down your browsing, you can opt out for yourself, and I discovered last time that if you obfuscate your links with a URL shortener like bit.ly or tinyurl.com, then they leave it alone, if you'd rather people clicking on your links not support LJ all-unknowing.

The 8 people who've asked for Dreamwidth invite codes on my previous post have had them mailed as of 10:40 PM Central -- if you asked before then and haven't got it yet, drop me a line and let me know. :)

Linkspam about the LJ affiliate-link code kerfuffle: http://rydra-wong.dreamwidth.org/200244.html

Of note is this link where an LJ support person shows up in the comments to explain what's going on, at least from her point of view (i.e. we already know that LJ administration is very much a case of the right hand not knowing what the left is doing and so at her level she doesn't know what the higher-ups are doing, only what they tell her).

And this link, which says the code should be gone now.
