Potential new neighbor

We've got a possible new neighbor. He's small and industrious, but I'm not sure he approves of Toby and me. He was out working on his house site yesterday, at the same time as Toby and I were out back putting our patio furniture together, and he kept coming out of the door and eyeing us suspiciously.

He may decide that living next to us is not worth the risk.

A male Downy Woodpecker, who did spend all morning working on this hole. He'd disappear into it headfirst so that all we could see was his tail:

and he'd work for a while chipping away at the interior of the tree limb there (the tree is literally half dead: the west half is dead while the east half is bursting out into full leaf), and then he'd spend some time spitting beakfuls of sawdust and wood chips out into the breeze, as you can see here:

Anyway, Toby and I usually aren't out on the back porch, but with the new patio furniture we should be, so our new neighbor here may decide not to raise his family in this particular hole.

YOU ARE BEING EYED WITH SUSPICION

Awwww, poor Mrs. Woodpecker. ..
I seem to recall reading somewhere a while back that in general male birds tend to be the flashier/prettier, and females are more muted colors.
